Tow Hitch for Element

681 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  4WDJay
Hi,
I just joined the Element club with a 2007 Element EX.

I want to add a tow hitch for a bike rack, and super light towing.

Could any of you suggest a hitch that just straight bolts on please? No drilling or other skills required.

Also, in the back under the spare, it looks like there is a plug outlet that would be for a wire harness? Is there a specific wire harness to buy that could be used and plug into that wiring back where the spare is, assuming that is what it is for?

Thanks in advance.

I read all the posts, but couldn't find a specific recommendation.

Thanks,

We just bought our 2007 Element on Wednesday and I have the Draw-Tite Max-Frame hitch on the way.

It bolts on - no drilling - and looks to be the easiest install of any hitch I could find. It definitely looks easier than any of the four other hitches I've installed on various vehicles in the last 10 years or so.

Check it out at eTrailer.com - they have an installation video to give you an idea of what the install process is like. Definitely looks like a pretty simple DIY install.

Thank you so much for that information.

Does anyone know, can or can confirm the wiring harness that the plug in the back is indeed for a hitch wiring plug for trailer lights? If so, which harness can I buy to work that is already wired to use that outlet?

Thank you in advance.
Check out Etrailer - excellent source for hitcher and wiring harness for your E, including installation videos specific to Elements. If I remember correctly, they have 3 hitch options for Elements (assuming you're looking for the typical 2" hitch receiver) and they also sell the specific wiring harness for Elements, with instructions on installing it (the connection is in the right rear, behind the cladding near the power outlet).

Looks like this is your option for a hitch that requires no drilling - I put the same hitch in my 2004 about 5 years ago and it has worked perfectly and installation was easy:

Just installed the Draw-Tite Max Frame hitch on my Element.

Just under 40 minutes working by myself and most of that was just figuring how to get the hitch in place and the bolts through all by myself with the E parked flat on the driveway.

Everything is very accessible.

A total of 4 bolts, 1 u bolt and 6 nuts to be tightened down.

Definitely the easiest hitch I've ever installed on one of our cars.

This is the wiring harness I used on our 07. One end plugs in behind the dash (accessible from underneath). The other end plugs in the harness in the spare tire well you mentioned.

That harness is a neat piece, it was not available when I did mine, I had to scour junk yards for an OEM one.
I installed this 2" Class III on ours.

Install was pretty straight forward, only challenge was opening up the side holes enough to get the plates into the frame rails. Also, when you are putting your receiver on remember to pull out the center plastic rivit from your rear plastic bumper cover. If you don't (at least for the 2") you'll not be able to access it in the future if for some reaon you wasnt to remover your rear bumper cover.
