The spiritual sucsesor to the old Hatchi Roku (the Toyota ae86) and a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru finally has official pics. Needless to say I will be getting one.

The Toyota FT-86 concept is the fruit of cooperation between Toyota Motor Company and Subaru, and as such will wear a common chassis and some degree of engine commonality, at the least a 2.0 liter, four cylinder boxer engine dubbed the "C-45 Boxer" and making between 200 and 250 HP will power the rear wheels through a manual six speed transmission, and get this — no hybrid system. Saints be praised.

Perhaps most telling are the car's overall dimensions. At 163.7 inches long, 69.3 inches, a wheelbase of 101.2 inches, and 49.6 inches high, it's thankfully compact, smaller in length, width and height than the Nissan 370Z, and slightly longer in wheelbase. It's also the first car to wear Toyota's new swoopy styling with some gusto. Dare we say it, we actually like the look of it. It's... exciting, we're so confused here. The interior is obviously all show-car glam and may serve as direction, but we'll be shocked if there are many zippers on the production car's dash.

We're men enough to admit that combined with the recently unveiled 2010 Toyota 4Runner, we're about to shed a tear over what looks to be the return of the old, fun AE86 sports coupe-building Toyota.
look for more information after the Tokyo auto-show this month

You're lining up to buy a concept vehicle? good luck..
All cars go through a concept phase before they are released to the public when and Toyota/Subaru first announced that they would build a joint venture sports car, it was stated that it would make it to show rooms floors. The idea was for it to be released in 2010 as a 2011, this year a rep for Toyota announced that it would be pushed 2011 as a 2012 model.

If your going to be a smart ass at least make a Toyota and boring joke :D

The original AE86 was a 1.6l given this isn't as small but for a modern car it's dimensions are pretty small. Also, if the orginal idea is still in play, this is not meant to be a competitor for the 360z, Gen Coupe 3.8 or the Mustang GT. Its meant to be an affordable fun car (more along the lines of a Gen Coupe 2.0t) Also its meant to be a power to weight thing not a raw power thing.

That's an infiniti with a Mazda happy face front end.
It's based on the FT-HS hybrid concept, which first shown in 2007. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_FT-HS

^^^True. It would just be nice if they considered a turbo too. Toyota needs to make something like the old turbo MR2's or Supra's again.... :-(

They should just take a WRX STI and put a Toyota logo on it and call it done.

I agree, but baby steps;-). Akio Toyoda has stated that Toyota has gotten to far from its roots so who knows whats around the corner. Supposedly more info will be put out at the Tokyo Autoshow, maybe a turbo is planed (or a TRD Turbo)
