what advantage is aftermarket CAI's?

While I was expert at repairing Landmark Buliding in downtown Chicago, and could build/fix anything, I've never been a car person.

So now retired and doing a lot of traveling and I read these posts about Cold Air Intakes.
But not sure what purpose they serves as some posts talk about sound and others talk about actual performance.

Or to put it another way, why should I, and if I did, what kind of payback would I realize?

please and thank you.

they will give slight mpq gain until you get on the gas. also they will give more power higher up in your rpm range.on the e the gain will be minimal.sound is a plus if you like it loud.
Like everyone else has said slight power gains and mpg. but i think the best part is the sound. Here's a dyno of the Injen CAI on an Element to show gains.
