Auto started it today and came out 10 minutes later to hear it making a weird sound. WTF?!?!

Sound is very similar to the famous Ford power steering pump sound.

I get in, turn the wheel a bit, sure as $&*@, the power steering pump is growling.

Pop the hood and the PS fluid level is just barely covering the return hole on reservoir.

I drive down the street, grab some generic power steering fluid, top her off and drive for a while. It seems like it worked mosat of the air out of the system but I can still hear a bit of a growl from the pump..

I never saw any puddles under the car...ever. Plus I was under there the other day doing an oil change and everything was dry as a bone. No leaks anywhere. PS fluid can't just magically disappear......or can it? Never has in any of my Civics.

Taking the car to the dealer tomorrow. Still under warranty, so I might as well.

Drain the fluid out and let you warranty do the work. By using aftermarket fluid the warranty can be voided on the PS if the mechanic is in a bad mood.

As far as where did it go, good question man. Could have had a bad ps pump seal or bad hose where drop by drop it fell to nothing. Uber weird but why worry about it when the warranty covers it all ;-).

I had the same sort of issue last winter. I thought if there was a leak I would see it in the snow but alas there was nothing. I put fluid in twice and then it stopped leaking and hasn't done it again yet. Did it heal itself or was it zombies stealing the fluid while I was sleeping?:?

All depends. Do zombies leave footprints in the snow?:-D

Got an appointment tomorrow afternoon to take the car in.

I'm betting that they're going to find absolutely nothing. I hope they find a leak that somehow doesn't leave any drips on the ground, but will be fixed under warranty. :-D

Dropped it off and I'm home waiting for them to call and tell me that they can't find anything wrong. Although I had to top it off again this morning.

The mystery of the disappearing power steering fluid. Oooooohhhh....

I usually work on other makes but there have been several occasions that I found fluid loss with no obvious external leak. It turned out the rack and pinion (steering gear) was leaking and fluid was collecting in the bellows (boots). Hopefully it something more simple in your case

Verdict is in. They're ordering me a new steering rack. Gotta love warranty jobs.

Crappy part is that the part won't be in until Thursday and I have to be in Minneapolis to catch a flight to Hawaii Thursday morning.

So the car is getting fixed after I get back. In the mean time they gave me three bottles of power steering fluid to keep topping it off.
