Windshield from Junkers?

232 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  wannahonda
Would anyone have any info on if a windshield is possible to get from a Junkers? Aka is it actually possible to safely remove them?
I'm looking for tips and tricks from any who have done it.
Thanks.

I do believe they will sell you a windshield but removing an old windshield can be tricky I have seen experienced windshield pros break them when removing them. Why not get a brand new aftermarket windshield, they are not too expensive. Are you in the Toronto area?

Don’t waste your time, seriously. I’ve changed many windshields and for the amount of hassle and extreme risk of breakage, just buy a new one…and have it changed professionally. You won’t regret it, it will be done properly, and you won’t be complaining about leaks, or worse yet, having the windshield fall out because someone used silicone (please NEVER use silicone on a windshield). It’s worth the cost.

I just had it done for a bit over $300. I do almost all the work myself, but will not do windshields. In addition to the windshield, you'll need the adhesive, the seal, you'll have to cut through the old seal (do you have the tool for that?), plus it takes two people to put it in unless you have the dohicky that can hold and position the windshield. Plus, when you do a tricky job for the first time, do you always get it right on the first try? If so, you're a better man than I am, and the cost of redoing this one is another seal, another tube of adhesive, and the time it takes to clean the adhesive off the windshield you take out, unless you break it when you take it out, which happens to pros.
i've done it .. its a pain.. you'll need the cable saw kit that harbor freight sells to cut the adhesive

you're better off having a pro do it
Just make sure when you hire a pro to do it that they put the adhesive all the way around for a complete seal, many so called pros will only dab a couple of drops at the top because some adhesive always oozes out and they have to spend a lot of time cleaning it up and these guys are all about doing as many jobs per day as they can as they get paid per windshield not by the hour. If they only put two dabs at the top it will leak and rust, So watch them when they apply the adhesive.

How is this a thing? It needs urethane 100% around, and the dispenser nozzle shape lays out the perfect bead required. If a shop doesn’t do it that way, they won’t be in business very long. The rust is typically the result of the pinch weld being gouged by the cutout knife, and the glass shop doesn’t repaint that little scratch.

I worked in the industry for many years, there are many windshield installers around here who will do this. I have had customers come in for rust repairs around the top of the windshield and we have the windshield removed and it is clear to see that only two dabs of urethane were put on at the top edge of the windshield. I would not call these installers "pros"
