I wish Gidget would live that long. The time flies.... Who knows if this was really the world's oldest pup - but it's in the record book.

NEW YORK -- A wire-haired dachshund that held the record as the world's oldest dog and celebrated its last birthday with a party at a dog hotel and spa has died at age 21 - or 147 in dog years.

Along with her owner, Chanel spent nine years on assignment in Germany, where she became adept at stealing sticks of butter from kitchen countertops and hiding them in sofa cushions in the living room, Shaughnessy said. She also liked chocolate, usually considered toxic to dogs, Shaughnessy said.

...Chanel exercised daily and ate home-cooked chicken with her dog food, but good care wasn't entirely responsible for her long life, said her owners, who attributed God.

"Dogs are God's angels sent here to look out for us," Denice Shaughnessy said.

Amen.

I'll tell ya, I'm not sure how old Dauchshunds are supposed to live, but our little one Beej that passed away last year was definatley older than the hills.

When we got him he was "supposed" to be around 10yrs, he looked old, acted old, had seizures, was grey everywhere and missing several teeth.
I figured we'd just have him a few years. We had him 12yrs!
Even if he was less than 10 when we got him, that dog lived a loooong time!:)
I think it was his crankiness that made him live so long;-)

Wow - if he had grey I'd think he was at least 7, if he had a lot of grey that does sound like 10 years old.

One of Gidget's buddies is a Dachsund, I'll be sure to pass this all along to his owner.

Hrm. I thought the oldest dog was a lot older than that....my ex-husbands yorkie died at 23! Never considered that maybe he was breaking a record lol
It's not uncommon for a doxie to live into the 20's. The oldest one I knew was 20 when she died ... of bloat. She was in perfect health.
Our two doxies

are 16 1/2 years old. They are sisters from the same litter. the large one, Heike, is not doing too well...she has seriously declined in the last year. the other, Kleine, is still hopping around like she is 2 years old.

I taught Kleine to howl 4 years ago and it has become her standard greeting when I return home after a trip. Dogs are great buddies. Really going to miss these two when they are gone.
"World's oldest" is certainly a stretch. It is remarkably old, but I've seen a number of 21 year old dogs, and a shelty that the owner claimed was 23. I doubt it was true, but the dog certainly looked it.

I'd believe it, considering how old our yorkie was. I'm a dog groomer and one poodle I've been grooming since I opened my shop was 12 years old when I started grooming her (and looked very bit of it). I've been grooming her for 11 years now. You can only imagine how she looks now at 23.
