I have tried several products on my exterior plastic, and they either were too difficult to apply or left terrible streaks after rain, and they all faded quickly.
I was going to try the Linseed/Mineral spirits mix, but couldn't find it locally so I decided to try Penetrol, which i already had in the garage. It's an additive/conditioner for exterior oil-based paints. According to the can, it is also used for conditioning bare or rusted metal, and fiberglass. I got the idea to try it from reading a Jeep forum. I did a small area on the tailgate about a month ago, which had the worst streaks, and it still looks great. No streaking.
I used the directions for applying to fiberglass.
Conditioning fiberglass
DIRECTIONS:
1. Clean surface to be conditioned.
2. Saturate a rag with Penetrol, wipe it on fiberglass surface.
3. Buff surface with a clean, soft cloth within 3-5 minutes.
It took me about 15 minutes to do the entire car.
Winter is coming soon, I'll watch how it holds up and keep this thread updated.
