i read a thread awhile back about someone wanting to store a spare key somewhere on the outside of their E, but of course in a hidden spot. I can't find that thread again. does anyone know of a good place to store one of these spare Honda keys in case i lose my key ? same goes for a spare remote for keyless entry.

I havent looked underneath mine in a while.......but how about tie strapping a key near the top of one of the tubes surrounding the fuel tank?

[quote:edced11b02="FMercik"]One option is to place underneath the Lic. plate thru one of the mounting screws.[/quote:edced11b02]

When I first heard that idea I thought it sounded great, but I have since learned it is too well known and too easily checked by potential thieves.

I like the idea of the magnetic case placed invisibly underneath the car somewhere difficult to reach. Even more secure would be beneath a panel you had to screw off, maybe the wheel wells? I haven't checked.

Years ago I remember reading a tip to hide a key behind a parking or taillight lens. Of course, this requires a screwdriver, a problem which I don't remember how the author addessed. Perhaps he suggested attaching a screwdriver with magnets to the car somewhere!

If you have keyless, Honda makes it very difficult to lock your keys in your car, btw.

It's almost impossible to lock oneself out. There's a secret trick to locking an Element without a key or the remote (known only to members of the IRTFM* Society), but since most people don't know how, it's typically not an issue. I had one of those Alzheimer's Moments tonight -- whatever the arrangement of keys on my ring is, there's some way to activate the "PANIC" mode unintentionally. This must be the second or third time I've done it. But, hell yes, I'm in a panic now! My air horns are honking like crazy, and I feel an idiot because I am standing there wondering how to make the honking GO AWAY!

I sail a boat that always results in myself ending up wet (it's a Hobie Cat; not lack of skill!), and that's one motivation for finding a place outside an Element to keep a key. (The manual suggests it's not a good idea to get these keys wet.) But I confess, I can't recall from last year what others do. Mine is parked in my former neighbor's yard, and is safe from hooligans when I'm sailing, so I don't actually have to worry about this issue.

*(I Read The Frickin' Manual)

As for a really good spot to hide a key, it would be a lot less secret if you posted here.

But, regardless of where you put it, if you hide a key outside the car that hasn't been programmed it will open the doors, but not start the car. If the key is found you'll lose the goodies in the car but someone can't drive off with it. A key w/o the head on it lets you get more creative about hiding places.

If you've locked your keys inside, this will get you going. If you're worried about losing your keys, then stash a programmed key somewhere inside the vehicle.
