Thanks ApriliaGuy. I went ahead and waited on changing it and ordered 8 washers and a bunch of other stuff from H & A. Hell for a .40 part they wanted $8 shipping so I stocked up on lots of other stuff too!

Have a happy holiday!

Thanks

Thanks for your detailed post! Changed the fluid last night and saved my a$$! The snow in the midwest has been out of control and my E runs so much better!!!!!!

Dang, I need to get back into reading this forum!
My '03 Element with 55k miles is starting to come up on all sorts of maintenance.
Silly me, I listened to that original sell job of "no maintenance required until 100k miles".
Whoa! whatta load THAT was.

Anyway thanks to this forum, that funny grinding noise on tight turns is GONE. I NEVER would have guessed it was diff fluid problem without this forum...nor would the dealer or my local mechanic...apparently.

I also changed the fluid(fushed twice) in the auto trans in my Element thanks to this forum...but thats a whole other thread.

Now to sift through all the TSB's and other maintenance I have fallen behind on.

This forum ROCKS!!!

Not much to worry about....you got most of it covered already. (Trans & diff every 20-30k or so...better yet, every 2-3 years based on your miles)

Do the brake fluid flush every 2-3 years and new coolant every 3 or 4 years (based on your use/mileage). Pull the brake callipers off yearly....clean, re-lube, and check pad wear.

I'm guessing you were remembering the "tune up" (really just spark plugs) is at 100k miles. Do a valve adjustment too...but doing it "early" around 60k is better than waiting 'til 100k (just in case).

You don't drive much do ya?! Welcome back!!!

that'd be certainly one pampered element... sitting pretty for sure. reminds me i'm due for trans and rear diff again, along with brake fluid in the spring. what do they say about shoemakers kids? ask my S/O about the mechanic's wife's car... lol.

I think I had a thread on here a long time ago about that. Mine sounded just like a coffe pot behind the dash it seemed. I looked in the coolant reservoir and noticed it was a bit low. I drained and refilled the radiator and reservoir and ran it for a few days then checked the level and topped off and the noise went away. Best I could tell it was air space in the coolant system being pumped through the heater core. I used GASP prestone universal. I'm an odd ball on this site and think almost all honda fluids are crap. The prestone takes in heat faster (faster warm up time) and lets out the heat (faster cool down time) which is what antifreeze is designed to do. It also has quieted down the waterpump. My E would turn on the water pump and run very loud when it would run its cycle but now its quiet. If you have an 05 they are known to have coolant issues where they plug passageways in the radiator. The best way to get rid of that is to drain and refill the fluid.
I know it's a little late, but thanks! i'll do a flush and fill this weekend.

Color of Dual Pump II Fluid?

Noticed today when I changed by diff fluid for the first time the Dual Pump II fluid looked like regular gear oil and not T/A fluid as descibed in the orginal post.

Did the color of Dual Pump II fluid change or has it always looked like regualar gear oil?

Thanks

Yes, it changed colors a bit too.

The DP II does look a bit like light weight gear oil. The factory fill in my E looked kinda red like ATF. (see photos in the begining of this thread) The first version of the DP fluid was only slightly red in the bottle.

All the DP II I've used hasn't had any red color to it.

Fluid change/intervals

... Mine is only 3 years old but they "cracked" loose. Take yer time and be prepared to use some creative language if yer rachet handle is short...
Two items:
Working on Japanese cycles over the years, they always used anti-seize on the dissimilar metal threads so they'd be easier to loosen in the future; no cracking (have you tried this? )
Also, upon my receipt of my new E, the dealer recommended that for my milage, I should change this fluid every year, 18k. I’ve seen the older manuals say either 60k or 90k, but I’m at 15k now and the “Maintenance Minder” is still off, so am I to assume & just do it? Maybe I’ll wait for either the noise or the light, whichever comes first! Rick

I wouldn't use anything like anti-seize on the threads. The plug comes out ok at future changes for me....I just wanted to warn people the first one might be tough.

Don't wait for the noise...noise & vibration equals wear & tear. Go ahead and wait for the light, but I'd change the fluid no later than 25-30k if it were mine. I've heard several times that the minder light (on the newer Es....well after this thread was started) for the diff service comes on every 20-25k or so, so you should be fine. Your dealer/service people seem to have a clue.

03 Honda Element now Works Great with no noise....

Love this forum.. You guys are all awesome with the questions and answers.. I am so happy that I was not the only person having this problem.. Thank You again.

I was fearing the worst when I heard the noise during turns. I was curious to see if anybody else was having the same problem and I found this website. I changed the diff fluid as directed here and now the grinding noise is gone. Thanks!

I just changed the diff fluid yesterday, as the 6 on my minder went off. I have a 2008 EX and just passed 60K miles, as my job in 08 called for me to drive all over FL. Real easy to do, the plugs were a pain to unscrew, though. I used the funnel technique as shown on page 1 of this forum. Is it necessary to have 1.1 qts? It was hard to measure exactly, as the angle of the funnel and tube made it difficult to make sure how much actually went it. I used the Honda II fluid.

Yeah, getting it full is important.

Don't worry about adding too much, you can't overfill it (assuming the car is sitting level) any excess will spill out the fill hole.

from post#6....
Forgot to mention.....checking the level:

Fluid should be level w/ the bottom of the top plug. If you start to overfill, the excess will just dribble out.
