Thanks for posting. Couple of questions
Do you use the Element Airbag?
My 2005 has cruise buttons but not radio buttons. Do all the Pilot wheels have these?
Do I need any other parts from the Pilot besides the wheel?
Thank you

Hi all,
I found a super nice leather 2005 Pilot wheel on eBay. Never used, so pristine. Today I started the install. Disconnected the battery, pulled the airbag, and loosened the center bolt.

Pulled out on the wheel… nothing. Pulled harder, in all directions, with and without nautical language. Still nothing. Got appropriate bolts for my wheel puller, threaded them into the wheel all the way (being careful not to cross thread) and began slowly tightening the puller. Not using a ton of muscle, just gently increasing the tension. Felt nothing, and then movement!

Except, the movement was the puller bolts shearing the threads out of the steering wheel. Magnesium is strong, but it is also brittle – evidently. More nautical language ensued.

So I gave up for tonight and put it all back together so I can drive the car. I have no idea what the next move is here. I did put a very small amount of Kroil down in the splines. One could try applying heat, but I don’t know how – without destroying something. It doesn’t appear to be rusty down in there, but it sure as hell is on there.

Maybe I should take this as a sign and leave well enough alone. Sell the Pilot wheel… But I would still really like to do the swap.

I’d welcome any input from y’all out there in the peanut gallery.

having removed a few oem steering wheels in the past, I have found pounding on the steering wheel rim alternatively at 9 and 3 oclock with my fists usually loosened them up enough to pull them off by hand. The upgrade is definetely worth the trouble, the leather steering wheel makes a big difference for me in my element

Thanks! I hit it pretty good, and not just once. But will try again - maybe next weekend. Still looking for any other "mechanical" ideas for loosening up.
I wonder if I could use spray duster to chill & shrink the shaft... Maybe that would work.

yeah try to wiggle it off by alternatively pulling on the left and right side of the wheel , I have had some steering wheels that I thought were not going to come off but eventually they did withouth any tools, not even a steering wheel puller

Wear a hockey mask or full face helmet if you have to pull at it that hard....dental work can be expensive.....

Everybody's a comedian...:ROFLMAO: Actually, you just leave the bolt on but 3 or 4 turns loose. Not that it matters in my case - I have the rare optional Perma-Wheel.
My spray duster arrived this week so I think on Saturday I will try the Big Chill...

I actually seen a guy put a fist and a hole thru brand new sunroof in an R56 MINI trying to yank a shift knob off to install a fancy aftermarket one ! To make matters worse, without delay he drove it to my dealership claiming a "manufacturering defect" of the sunroof glass tempering process while car was parked in the hot sun.... One could clearly see what had happen...lol.

Just wanted to report back that I was able to complete the wheel replacement this weekend. I used a can of spray duster to really chill the steering shaft - removed the bolt, squirted the top of the shaft and around the bolt hole, and put the bolt back a few turns to control the wheel in case it wanted to fly off when pulled. It took several tries but eventually the wheel just loosened up and came off. No dramatic pop or anything - I just noticed it got loose. One note of caution - you want to mind the spray, as it is seriously cold and will burn your skin if you get splashed. I was also pretty careful to keep the spray concentrated only on the steel shaft and off of any part of the wheel or hub.

Got everything swapped over to the leather wheel with no fuss, no drama. I used a bit of anti-seize on the taper and splines before reinstalling the wheel and torquing the bolt back down. Had it not been for the stubborn wheel, it would have been a half-hour project. Overall pleased with the outcome.
