After all new chains and tensioners it still was ticking. The same with wife's E. So I have to figure it out. I might have an answer!

is that part replaceable? i cant find it at rock auto.... i have just developed a sound similar....i have almost 500,000kms, re did valves again, they are good....my compression is tolerable for that many kms, and only 15 lbs between the highest and lowest.....i would give that a go if i could find what the part is...

Long story. The original engine, which I believe had a piston slap problem, was replaced shortly after purchase because they said it a cylinder was "scored". The engine that was installed had about 135,000 on it. At 205,000 it was using a quart of oil almost every tank of gas. Compression was 180+ on all cylinders. Leakdown of one cylinder exceeded 10%. I ended up pulling the pistons, honing the cylinders, installing new OEM rings and rod bearings (engine in the vehicle). The rings and oil holes in the pistons were quite carboned up; I cleaned the ring grooves and oil holes. According to a shop I talked to after the fact, I probably should have installed new pistons, but that would have pushed it way out of her budget.

After putting it back together, it had a faint knocking sound similar to the original engine. I took it and the old engine (disassembled) to a local rebuild shop; they confirmed that the faint sound I heard was likely piston slap because of worn piston skirts (showed them pictures of the pistons and compared to the pistons from the original engine) and that an engine can run a long time in that condition and suggested that I not bother to rebuild the old engine just yet.

The work I did cured her oil consumption problem; she can go 5000 miles between changes without having to add any. Unfortunately, she developed the dreaded P2646 problem occasionally that was diagnosed to be because of low oil pressure. I should have gone a little further and replaced the crank bearings.

damn, you went way in there lol....my e goes through a bit of oil, but hasn't got worse in years......i had engine misfire codes, then the knock.... i drove it home and started investigating....2 plugs were shot, 2 looked really good....1 bad one had 175lbs and the other 160....the other 2 were 170, 175......reset valves again(did em in fall) and all were pretty good....did a synthetic oil change and added lucas additives....i dont hear it when driving, but at idle it bugs me lol....but at almost 500,000kms i might just ride it out, she owes me nothing lol
