Hi there. Im moving from Chicago to Phoenix in 3 weeks. A friend told me he knows of Honda experiancing exterior as well as interior pieces that become damaged, ugh, "melt" was the actual word that he used, due to the extreme heat. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I love my Element and would just hate to go through troubles of this kind. Thanks much in advance. Mike. [/img]

After many years of being a cold weather Yankee who was living deep in the heart of Texas from 1977 to 1987 you learn a few "hot" vehicle lessons:

#1: SIT DOWN CAREFULLY when it is hot outside...plastic interiors can give you quite a start when they have been baking all day. A seat cover or a towel helped keep bare legs away from the seat.

#2: Weather permitting, leave the window cracked just a bit when your car is being left outside all day. Of course this may not be practical where you will be living/working, but it allows some of the hot air to escape and minimizes the "blast furnace" effect when you open the door.

#3: Be aware of what you may leave inside the car that could be subject to high temperatures. I always took aerosols out, or other items that don't react well with heat.

Nothing ever melted...except a pint of ice cream that rolled out of the shopping bag one morning and got lost under a seat.

your question in the members area for Arizona. Up here in Seattle melting isn't so much the issue as mold and moss are

If an original interior trim piece melts from sitting in the sun, you should be able to get it replaced under warranty.

When I was a kid I left my Etch-a-Sketch in the back window once. It melted. Silver gak went everywhere when The Mom started driving w/ the windows down. It was a life scarring moment for me...I never knew The Mom had such a vocabulary.

8)Many moons ago while working in the Mojave area. I left a candle in a bag which was to be a gift in the car. It was one of those 115 days, I returned to a wax pool and the car never lost that vanilla smell.
No plastic pieces within the vehicle shown any damage, even the rear view mirror stayed on the glass.

 Slug

...but watch out for plastic "fossilizing" faster. (ie - becoming brittle due to the heat and aridity)

This more affects interior items that bear weight. A friend of mine had a Jetta for several years and had to have a plastic part of the automatic window assembly replaced two or three times due to it just snapping from the weight of the window after it dried out.

AZ is also probably in the running for being the cracked dashboard capital of the US....

Your Element melting will be the least of your worries in Phoenix!!

I flew out of there one morning and two hours later they shut down the airport as it hit 122 and their takeoff charts only went to 120!! Two hours later the airconditioner at my house quit and my wife got to handle that, while I cooled my heels in a nice bar in Virginia. Fortunately, we had two A/Cs in that house so she was not in any immediate peril!

Welcome to Arizona! It's a dry heat, kinda like a pizza oven!

Yes, element J does have a TSB posted about the skirt. But my girl lost her head and her torso. My dealer kept making excuses about "you installed it wrong" and "It was an aftermarket glue that also caused my windshield to crack."

The VW Buses (many, many, poor little air cooled boxes) we had when I was a kid always smelled like Crayola crayons, go figure!

I wish the E had a "oh s#!t bar" on the dash like those V-Dubs.
