I have been doing some reading, and most of the people i've read from have all spliced rca pre-amp outputs into their factory harness. If the amp has speaker level inputs, what would be the outcome of bypassing the pre amp, and wiring straight to the amp? I have read that there is no pre amplification in the 04 factory head unit, so does that mean that it would transmit the same signal level as a pre amp rca? I have done a couple of installs, but am by no means an expert. Thanks.:)

All of the EX head units output a line-level signal which means no amplification. I don't know how many Volts the signal is but it is sufficient to drive any decent aftermarket amp. You can do as other (and I) have and splice into the harness behind the HU and run that directly to the RCA inputs on your amp.

I wouldn't advise using any speaker-level inputs on an amp unless you're not particularly concerned with the quality of the sound. The reason being that the amplification in the factory components is not good above a certain volume level and once you have distortion on the input, the amp is only going to make it worse. Wherever possible, use the line-level inputs for your aftermarket amps and you will be greatly rewarded.

Loc?

I read in one of the posts that it would be best to use a line output converter on the line level signal to convert it to rca pre amp level. Is this necessary, or can i splice directly to an rca harness? My amp is an eclipse ea4000 and does have an input voltage adjust knob.

I haven't been quite as active on these boards lately, but i'm pretty sure i remember someone (outpost4 maybe?) measuring the volts on the preouts @ about 1v. Personally i refuse to use anything below 4. 2 is pretty much the bottom line standard. I remember it being said the best thing to do is to use a LOC, but I can't speak from experience on that. The BEST thing to do is to get an aftermarket deck, but I realize a lot of people don't want to change that out for cost, oem feel, aesthetics, etc.

So to answer your first question: 1v

To answer your second question: not sure whether loc > or < factory pre-out.

"To this end, we embarked on a two-year project to develop CleanSweep® CL441dsp — US Patent #7,167,515, a DSP-based solution that permits almost any factory-installed audio system to serve as the source for a high-performance aftermarket sound system while also providing input for an additional source of your choice."

It creates high-volt RCAs from a head unit without them.
