My E came with surf racks on them (OEM HONDA) which I barely use and want to remove to get a little better mpg. Anyone know how to remove them? I took a look and I was a little confused...can anyone give me the steps to removing them?

Thanks!

Roof Racks cause drag and since i drive about 60/40 freeway/surface streets this should help.

Meh, it's so little that you MIGHT save yourself a couple gallons of gas a YEAR. Not worth it if you ask me. You're get more out of it if you folded in your passenger side mirror. :)

Seriously though, I drove around for a MONTH with an ocean kayak strapped to my roof rack (people can vouch for this) and I saw about a 10 mile/tank difference. That's a full blown 11 foot kayak strapped TO my OEM roof rack. :)

But do as you please. I don't remember making a single one of your car payments. :)

BTW, that link posted earlier works. Just gotta give it time. Maybe try to right click it and go "save as". Good luck.

Rack Miles per gallon

I would agree, want to get better MPG take off your side mirrors.
As I was testing wind noise on my rack I made a test with both mirrors removed...WoW big noise makers must add drag to mpg. I should create a micro mirror with exterior mounts for max mpg..

Oh yeah with rack using "scan gauge II" and by the tank, maybe a 1 mpg change and never more than 9 miles on a tank. Want to get 31 mpg, never exceed 2100 rpm's and drive 55 mph max...It can be done.

You're driving a metal brick.
Yup. But he wants to drive his brick with out a roofrack...and the mpg discussion ain't gettin' it off any quicker.

The link worked for me BTW.

To remove roof rack:

pry up little plastic covers on the ends of the bars and remove the screws.

lift off bars

put the screws in the holes so ya don't loose 'em.

replace plastic covers.

Hopefully you have the orig covers that are used like the "skirts" that go around the feet, to cover the holes in the roof.

Good luck, have fun. :)

do you still have the original covers for when you remove the racks?

I just installed the OEM roof racks.

too bad we didn't arrange earlier.

What color is your E?

I still have the OEM covers - they are blu.

I am pretty sure my racks will stay on .......

what year E do you have?

mine is 06

maybe they would work for you?
