Shudder under load

My Element has developped a shudder through the drivetrain when I am accelerrating......especially in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears (it's a 5 speed manual transmission with 2 wheel drive). I'm thinking worn cv joint. Am I thinking in the right direction?

...not sure how to describe the "shudder". The front right drive wheel seems to be the culprit. The vehicle picks up this "shudder" as the vehicle accelerates under load...goes away as loads reduces as I back foot off the gas. No clonks from that region while turning as yet.

If it were a side-to-side type of vibration, I would say you should check out the axels. It is a very distinct vibration and may feel like a shudder. Typically you can feel it while accelerating, and it will stop as soon as you let off the gas. It will get progressively worse and more prominent.

Its really hard to say, though.. It could be a number of other things.

Had the same problem with a 2WD Auto. Did search on the famous Honda shudder, and concluded that axles could be the probable culprit.

Took over 2 weeks to get to the bottom of this:
1) Bought 2 front axles from Advance (cost less than ~$50 each after coupon code, dealer wants ~$300 out the door for each)
2) Jacked up car and found 3 mounts real bad and broken (front, rear, tranny mounts)
3) scramble to buy 3 mounts, almost $200 for OEM version (front from local dealer, the other 2 online).
4) Installed new mounts, one by one, and test drove, shudder not fixed at all.
5) Pop out/in driver side axle, shudder gone!

Didn't touch passenger side axle yet, not sure if I want to. All boots looked fine, and no noticeable play on any joints.

Wondering if axle caused mounts to fail or the other way around. But glad the ordeal is over.

To help others chasing this problem, here's what happened to mine:

Symptoms: shudder/shake/vibrate under acceleration within a speed range, in my case, between around 50-60 mph range. Out of this range, everything was smooth. Even within the range, if foot off gas, no shudder.

Internet search (including on this site) reveals a list of probable causes (from most likely to least, or a combination):

axles/mounts/prop shaft(4WD)/calipers/rotors/transmission

Rotated tires and checked wheel bearing play (no issue there), no change in shudder.

In my case, eventually it was the driver side axle. Used a new Advance GSP axle, and all is well. Car has about 190k miles.
