[SOLVED] Blinking Empty Fuel Light / Fuel Gauge Empty After Putting On Needles

SOLVED: For anyone who is experiencing this problem, the solution for my 2007 LX automatic was to make sure that the wiring warness that plugs in to the back of the instrument cluster was plugged in snugly. (On my 2007 LX, there is only ONE wiring harness that needs to get plugged in.)

Luckily for me, there was no soldering required. The instrument cluster dials, lights, and the radio and air lights are all working fine again.

The following video didn't apply exactly to my needs, but it might be helpful to anyone else trying to diagnose the problem (I personally didn't need to insert folded up tape below the socket, but others might need to).

Hope this helps!!!

ORIGINAL POST:

2007 Element, base model, automatic.

My orange, circular empty fuel light keeps blinking AND the fuel gauge is at empty (slightly BELOW empty, truth be told).

My son and I just actually got in to the instrument cluster yesterday because both the RPM and Tachometer needles had fallen out of the sockets that hold them in. We had to disconnect that large electrical wiring connector on the back of the to take the clear plastic off of the front of the instrument cluster.

We put the needles back on at more-or-less the right angles, connected the harness back up, put it all back together.

While the tachometer and speedometer are more or less correct, the fuel empty light blinks and the fuel gauge is empty.

My son was the one doing most of the work. Maybe there is a second cable that needs to be plugged back in?

Thanks in advance for any suggetions.

The only plugs are on the back of the gauge. If you missed one, it could cause the issue. The wires could have fallen into the dash.

Thanks for the reply.

I am not sure what you mean by "plugs" though.

When we pulled the gauges out, it was just one large single wire harness (as far as we can tell) that plugged in more or less toward the back of the Tahometer.

Are you saying there are possibly more wires that need to be plugged in that we didn't see?

Oh, and also the red airbag light is on.

I don't know what I was thinking. I should have said plug. It's what I get for working on too many things at once.
Did you plug or unplug it when the power was applied? I would check the fuses under the steering column to start.

I am assuming that you see these lights after the vehicle is running.
I don't see any connection (electrically) between the airbag and the fuel gauge / light, though I am in a 2005 shop manual. I'm at a loss here, so I hope someone else chimes in with a better idea.

Interesting how things change over the years. My 2003 has 2 wire connector plugs in the back. Seems like your 2007 only has one?

Mine instrument cluster had wonky backlighting, turned out to be the solder joints (https://www.elementownersclub.com/t...gram-dash-instrument-cluster-lights-out-confirmed-cracked-solder-joints.171290/). A month or so later, the fuel gauge went wonky. I thought it might have been the cluster again …. But no, it was a bad fuel gauge sender in the fuel tank (https://www.elementownersclub.com/threads/i-need-a-fuel-pump.172099/).

Not much of a moral to the story except to say that spending some quality time reading the service manual information might give you some direction. See: https://www.elementownersclub.com/threads/free-service-info.173256/

Perhaps this is what I was thinking about when I said plugs ... :sneaky:

Here is an ebay link for a 03-04 cluster. It’s got a pic of the backside with 2 plugs.

I couldn’t find a pic of a 2007 non-SC version.
