Window tint experience needed

I put this in "interior" because I am more concerned with the view out, NOT the look of the vehicle. It will look good regardless, lol.

I desperately need to tint the windows in my E, as I am cooking down here in the desert. What Ive read seems to say the OEM privacy glass is about a 20% tint, but it is not that dark at all from the inside, and I can barely tell a difference between the fronts & rears when looking out.

What I am unsure of is if I tint the rears with a 35% tint, will it look closer to a 5% or a 20% tint (inside looking out) when combined with the OEM privacy glass?

I would call your local tint shop to get a good answer. in my experience, if you put tint over the rear (already tinted) windows it will be much darker. Not sure what percent though.

Most of us agree that 15% on the front matches the back. Anything added to the back is going to make it darker for sure.

From the "inside looking out" you will also notice that it is darker although you should be able to still see out in the daylight. Night time is different, I have factory on my rear windows and find it hard to see out in dark conditions.

Hope this helps, maybe someone who knows for sure will come along.

mine are tinted and are insanely hard to see out of. not sure what percentage tint film was used because it was there when i bought the car. it looks great outside the car but even when its sunny its a pain, dont get me started on how dark it is at night. you cant see anything but headlights.

The sun shines here 365 days of the year, and combined with high altitude it can be a real killer, not just from heat but also the UV damage it does.
My previous car had 5% on all windows and during the day it was perfect, didnt need sunglasses to drive but could still see fine even with sunglasses. Night driving was most difficult, and headlights were just about the only thing visible. That was also on a del Sol, which had much smaller windows and a solid black interior. I am not opposed to 5% again, but I would like a little lighter for night driving.

My concern is, although the privacy glass looks dark from outside, looking out from inside the fronts & rears really look the same. If I put a 20% on the front windows & left the rears oem, the front windows will clearly be darker than the rears while driving, which I do not want. Of course all I can ever find pictures of is exteriors when it comes to tint.

After talking to a friend of mine this morning that tints, I decided to go with 20% on all windows. I think because they look the same from inside, the same tint level on all windows will also look the same, regardless of privacy glass rating. I ordered a precut tint kit from Ebay, a whopping $26. May not be the best film, but cheap enough to experiment with. When I get it installed I will share interior pics, because Im sure I am not the only person to ever wonder this. lol

Never attempt tint yourself unless your a pro. Home done tint never lasts. I have 35% on top the factory tinted glass. The fronts are about 5 or 10, was there when I bought the car in Arizona. Its dark but not a wall on the inside. I can see out the rears at night with nothing but street lights here in So Cal. When the panel LED's light up the interior at night, its as if no tint is even on the windows.

This is 35% on the factory tint:

and notice you cant see the bright sunset through the car since its both sides blocking the light:

Check with your state vehicle codes. Some states require that you can not go to a certain darkness. I had window tint I got in Florida. I live in Virginia. I had a little motorcycle cop that had a terrible ego problem stopped me for my window tint. Even though the Chief of Police here liked my truck. This little runt had something to prove. Instead of going to jail for beating the hell out of this pathetic little male, I took off the tint. He got the hell beat out of him and it was a great joy to pick him up on my ambulance all torn up. I told him how well I thought of him. I'd rather see his chalk outline than pick him up alive.

lol, this wont be my first time tinting a car. Most DIY tint jobs dont last because preparation is everything and store bought tint is garbage.

I am more than familiar with the local laws regarding window tint, and Ive never once been hassled by officers for dark tint. Ive been pulled over for speeding a few times & even then not a word about the tint.

Your front windows cannot be 5% or 10%, in pic 2 I can pretty clearly see your dash through the drivers window & the yard through the windshield. & pic 3 it looks like the pass window is either down or not tinted at all. Honestly your front tint looks like 35%. Love the rims in pic 3 btw, those are badass.

This is 5% from the inside. Windshield strip is solid vinyl (0% tint, lol)

& this is 5% at a similar angle to your Pic 2, note how you can barely see the brightly colored gravel through the windshield, dash is only a silhouette.

& this is 5% in direct summer sunlight.
