I have made a couple racks with a folding rear bar to allow the glass panel to be removed. It does add to the price, picture attached. The parts are billet aluminum and add 2" to the overall length.

Gobi Story

I bought a 2008 Element the end of June and ordered a new Gobi rack. The rack was installed in August. It is well made and rated for 300 lbs plus. I bought it for bikes, ladders, lumber and anything you could imagine. The build quality was great --- however I found the following.
1. Difficult to clean the roof.
2. Fairing seal traps dirt and scratches the roof.
3. Wind noise increases - not a lot but you hear the rack in the wind.
4. Does at times, interfere with XM reception.
5. Penalty of 1 1/2 to 2 mpg.
6. Higher center of gravity causes more body roll - on an under sprung chassis.
I also found that I had trouble loading the rack with bikes. Balance is a problem for me. So I sold the rack, mounted a receiver hitch and receiver bike rack and now do business at sea level.
