Cowl water headache. Cowl seal? Water in footwell. Help!

05 LX bought a few months ago.

I'm getting water in driver side footwell from rain. I can feel it coming in under the dash (I can get my fingers past the dash insulator liner and feel wetness on the metal.)

When I position my garden hose directly over the driver side cowl grill slits I see water coming into the engine compartment and dripping down the firewall. It must then be making it inside the vehicle via a firewall seam or a hole from a wire harness clip or some sort. I would think that normally water shouldn't be distributed into the engine compartment.

With the hood up you can see the front lower lip of the cowl where it sits on the metal body. The cowl has a lip that covers the edge of the metal, and the water is clearly leaking down from just under the plastic cowl where it sits on the metal. The question is whether there is a crack beneath the cowl or whether there should be a seal beneath it that has deteriorated or is missing. I can also see that this isn't the original windshield glass, so maybe whoever installed it messed up the cowl.

Should there be a seal of some sort between the flat bottom of the plastic cowl and the metal body on which it sits. If so, anyone ever need to replace this seal?

Is there a link with instruction to replace this part? I'm not sure if I can just replace the seal or if I need to get a whole new cowl. A new cowl might have the seal already attached.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, but that's not it. Mine is leaking from the driver's side and results from water going directly onto the cowl grill slits on the driver's side (where rain naturally goes in on all Elements), so the problem is not that the cowl isn't flush against the windshield (as was the case in the video). It's that once the water enters the cowl's top grill some of the water isn't then being properly diverted to the driver-side wheel well and then to the street (although some does). Some of the water goes immediately straight down into the engine compartment and flows along the firewall below dash. I don't think it's a clog since as soon as I pour some water into the cowl's grill it'll start dripping down beneath hood to engine area. I can see in to the cowl grill with a flashlight and there's no apparent backup while pouring.

So apparently there IS a seal strip under the front of the cowl cover. Further inspection shows that the original seal is broken and deteriorated. See picture. Looks like it was just adhesive foam strip that flattened and hardened over time. Easy hardware store item.

Any suggestions or links to the driver's side cowl cover removal?

Thx

It used to be that you could literally do this with the point of a pocketknife and a socket, but rust has crept in to the equation over the years. The basic instructions are shown in the "install fog lights" article in the "FAQ / How To's" section which has gotten buried behind a blurb for H&A so it's easy to miss for first timers. Try this:

My only tip is to watch out for the two tiny tabs, one at the top of each wheel well. Make sure they're free before you lift the cowl off. Other than that - it sounds like a big job but after it's off, you'll look at it and mutter "That's all?" The whole front of the car is held on with a few screws and a handful of plastic pegs. Have something soft on the ground/floor to set it on.

So I removed the cowl, which was not as difficult as I had imagined. I then went ahead a cleaned of any remaining dried, flattened foam strip seal from the underside edges, applied new foam and reinstalled. Tested with hose water going directly into the cowl grill opening. No more pouring down over bottom edge into engine compartment.

Light rain last night. So far so good.

For those of you who also find you have water in your footwell after rain I would definitely suggest directing a hose over the cowl grill with the hood up in order to see if water is leaking directly into engine compartment close to firewall. That's the first place to check because it's the easiest to eyeball with immediate results.

Also, when removing the cowl take care to remove the left and right side together as they are clipped together from behind in the middle and you don't want to break that clip. Best to have a friend assist.

I have the same Leak ..Only has happened 2 time I remember in 18 years of ownership .. Saw a post on a Honda CRV website ..Looks like the element has the same setup .. Here' s Pics of the A/C opening and the "flashing" I have made for it .. I'm midway thru this "operation" and will report back the results ...
