Ok, I'm FINALLY getting motivated to do this, even though I've had the fluid in the basement for months now. Was driving along the other day, and slowing down from about 50 to a stop, heard a not so good noise. Thought it was the brakes, but then I heard it again when I wasn't on the brakes. Sounded like a rubbing sort of a noise, like if a caliper was stuck or something.

So, diff fluid change, here I come!

Hi friend. If the diff fluid is due for change by all means change it.

But the noise you describe doesn't square with the trigger noises I have heard described. Still might be brakes.

patman...go for it...i did mine 2 weeks ago,,it took me under 10 mins..its so simple..you need 2 bottles but it only takes 1 and a quatar so your have some left over..i did not use a funnel,,,i just twisted a nipple top onto the bottle and stuck the nipple right into the fill hole and squeez the bottle...good luck,,

True, it could still be the brakes. But, think changing the diff fluid seems to be a relatively quick and easy maintenance item to try first, to at least eliminate it as the possibility.

The interesting thing is I've only heard the noise three times. Twice while coming to stops from about 50 (once on the brakes, once not), both on slight declines. Third time was the next day, doing a low speed (parking lot) no-brake slowdown.

So, we shall see. Just picked up the tubing and funnel before work this morning (hooray for hardware stores opening at 7:30 am).

Also, I did do a quick check to see if it was brakes when I got to my destination - no funny smells from any of the wheels, and the wheels were not hot to the touch (can you tell I've had a stuck caliper before in another vehicle?) Again, that may not mean anything, but I'm hoping it isn't the brakes...

hey patman,,,this might help a little,,,my friends car was making a noise when braking,,for weeks he could not find the source,,,finally he decides to just change all the brake pads,,when we took off the rear pads .the noise was the brake shim fell off the pad and was hitting the rotor..

Big thanks for the DIY instructions! It's now night and day. No more stuttering and shaking during slow sharp turns. So smooth.....:-D...I encourage everyone to DIY!!! Cheers!!!

I was all set and ready to do this after work on Friday, but I couldn't get the dang filler broken free, even after hitting it with some penetrating lube (CRC Super Lube is all my Ace had in that regard).

So, guess I may need to soak it a few more times, and try to get at them again. Just don't want to bust my ratchet, ya know!

Leverage is your friend in this situation.:)

patman,,i did mine 3 weeks ago,,mine was also tight and i was crawled under the car,,stick the socket handle in the cap and just hit the handle with hard stort strokes,,i dont think the handle will break mine was a craftsman and i beat the handle good ,,the bolts came out,,,good luck

Yeah, I think that plus the 1/2 drive handle (and 3/8 adapter) should give me some more leverage, as was recommended by ApriliaGuy.

That should work,if not double wrench your drive handle for even more leverage and it's sure to come off. 8) Another trick is to try to tighten it a little before loosening. If you happen to own one,you could use a Gorilla power wrench with an 3/8 adapter to break them loose.

^^I have the Slime brand l.e.d. lighted version of this wrench and it works great on more than just lug nuts.:)

Well, I'll give the new ratchet a try (when it arrives) - if that doesn't work, perhaps I'll try the Gorilla one.

I'm having the same problem. I damn near snapped the wrench off. I'm going to try it again this weekend.

Someone told me to spray some WD40 in there. Would that help?

Any decent penatrant is worth a try. I'm a big fan of PB Blaster, CRC "ScrewsLoose" and Kroil. Especially Kroil. ;-)

Spray a day or two ahead of time...and a few more times if possible. Let the stuff soak and "creep" in.

I've had the best results "cracking" stuck plugs and bolts loose by giving the handle of a breaker bar (or rachet) a good smack with a heavy hammer.
In the E's case, be sure the drive end of the rachet/bar is securely seated in the plug recess, you don't want to strip it out!

Thanks much! I'll give that a try this weekend and hopefully I don't snap anything off. ;)
