After seeing a lot of others attempts I was inspired to make my own, I took a few ideas from here and there to make something which maximizes the space above and below. At the moment it's not quite finished, still a few edges to round over, sand and finish. Then add some turnbuckles to hold it in place.
It's mostly 3/4" plywood, 2x4's and some piano hinge, oh and the all important Ikea legs! There's approx 12.5" clear underneath for storage, which can be accessed from the front door, rear flap, or top access panel!

the costs so far......

4' x 8' 3/4" plywood $25
2 x ikea legs $10
piano hinges $15
2 x 2x4's $4
misc screws etc $5

cost so far ......about $60 (CDN), so about half that if you live in the US ;-)

I still have to finish / paint the plywood, but hoping to find something cheap, anyone recommend something that doesn't smell too much?

Outstanding!

That is a really nice, well thought out design! The quality of your labor really dwarfs the cost of materials. One question: should you place a board under the two front posts so that the weight they hold is spread out over a greater area? Otherwise the posts might damage the flooring.

Thanks chelement! I think the posts would be okay, they sit on carpet which sits on another mat that sits on the original floor, and they have a nice plastic cup on the base but i'll bear it in mind when I test it out.

VERY NICE!!!! Similar to what I was thinking.....would love the dimensions as I have some of the materials (piano hinge, 2x4s) so I can get started on our platform. How well does it remove/fold flat? :? :?
Thanks for a great pictorial..

A very nice job.

Though 3/4 plywood is probably overkill for most of the top panels, considering the short spans that they have to bridge and the max loads they have to bear, it simplifies the job to a single sheet purchase.

Being a fan of the lightweight container bones and skin designs of blueskykitchen http://www.youtube.com/v/9sU-jNydW60&hl=en&fs=1, I'll use 1/4", and make the rear section as a pair of custom chuck boxes.

Looks great! Looking at the piece just behind the front seats, it seems like you could add a collapsible extension (maybe with a locking collar) that would allow you to raise this platform and form a table, and then put cushions on the middle section for a seat.

Instant dining table, which collapses into the sleeping foundation when its time for bed.
