I just purchased my Element a week ago. It is a 2005 with 81k on it and I got 207 miles before my gas light came on. I figured it would get just a tad bit better than that.. I feel your pain Sam.
Need to check on your engine condition. I just filled up yesterday. 237 mi. on 12.8 ga. on a 3 cyclinder/turbo total in town driving. #4 has a badly burnt valve and 30# of compression. I know there is something wrong w/the Hellement.

In the 2 months or so that I've had my '07 EX w/ 167XXX miles, I've consistently averaged 22 mpg in 95% "around town" commute-driving.

When I go to fill up, I'm usually at about 280-300 miles on the trip od with some room left to go. The idiot light tends to come on around 290-ish miles

2008 EX ECamper AT 83K Miles

Gas light usually turns on around 250 miles depending on how much city driving has been done. Since having the ECamper there has been no noticeable difference in mpg's. Adding the Yakima Skybox does drop it by 2-4 gallons depending on wind and driving habits. Luckily it's easy to remove and don't need it on the E full time.

Here's a first for me 353 miles before the yellow 'low fuel' light turns on.
Managed to juice out 368.5 miles before filling in 13.474 gallons.

27.35 miles per gallon at 65-70 mph.

:-o Holy Shart! Do you just *never* leave the freeway?

95% freeway........ just a small portion of arterial road and a starbucks stop

even my drive in Toronto (through city and highway traffic) netted me 300 miles before the yellow light turned on.

And I carry a Thule T2 bike rack!

OK...after 3 fuel ups with my E I am officially disappointed. :( I am getting 17 MPG (13.7l/100 Km). Now I knew fuel efficiency wasn't the Element's strong point but still...kinda shocked at the poor performance. I will try to slow down the driving but frankly I've been very careful with my starts and my braking.

I do 95% city driving and always seem to be at a red light but still wouldn't expect this type of fuel efficiency.

:x

I also always leave the o/d off (as it is when you start the car). I recently changed my engine air filter. Anything else that could be off?

It takes alot of energy (gas) to get a 3500 lb box moving from a start. I guess the advantage of mostly city driving is you don't have to worry about aerodynamics much. I just had the worst mpg ever. About 21 mpg going from Phx to San Diego. 80-85 mph and 400 extra pounds in the back and headwinds. My normal is 24 mixed driving around Phx which of course mostly flat.

Recently driving from State College PA to Buffalo NY, I got 195 miles at 6.61 gal..... Comes to 29.50 mpg..... Just easy on gas..... most cruise control, manual intervention on hills to keep rev approx 2000 rpms and dont exceed 5-10 mph over spd limit..... seems like 70 mph (110kmh) is approx optimal point.

Just made a trip to Nebraska and back. We got 28 MPG going there and about 26 MPG coming back. Coming back we had wind, rain, snow and our daughter doing some of the driving which can effect the mileage.

Hi folks. Have only had my E for about 2 months now but have gotten 25mpg (twice) when mostly city driving, and just got 27.6 with a lot more highway added in. Haven't taken a lengthy highway trip yet.

I don't keep track of the mileage per tank... (I really try to avoid even letting the indicator light pop on), but I get about...

18MPG - 40% city driving and 60% highway
22.5 MPG - average over 350 miles with going mostly 70 on the freeway with a bit of traffic when I went through LA...
24 MPG - average as the best I've gotten going back another 350 miles, mostly freeway, with less traffic.

recently did a 700 miles each way trip to camp up north and tracked my mileage.

348 miles @ first fill up (arco), needed 13.2 to fill up = ~26mpg

was at over 200 miles at half a tank from second fill up! (all highway)

end up with 414 miles @ next fill up (shell), needed 13.4 to fill up = ~31mpg

then drove 296 miles @ next fill up (mobile), need just 10.4 to fill up (stopped early to gas up and eat)= ~28.5mpg

drove past the fuel light for a while 436 miles @ last fill up (arco), needed 13.62 to fill up = ~32 mpg

on the inside of the car I had: 2 adults on the way there/3 adults on the way back, plus camping gear (tents, sleeping bag, water jugs, cooler, cooking pots/pans, chairs, sleeping platform (rear seats removed), plastic tubs, dry food, etc

on the outside I had: tires with nitrogen @ 38psi, removed roof rack rails, filled in fog light holes and drove 85% of the way with the rear view mirrors folded in.

while there is no scientific date to support my opinion I do feel that the last 2 added in 'some way' to my awesome mileage. during normal local driving I average 22-24 mpg

I really liked my E before, but after this awesome trip and great fuel efficiency (considering all the gear I was carrying) I'm totally lovin' my elefante!
