I have an 03 4WD EX AT Element SOP with 110K miles. I am on the fence about just keeping it, or buying something new. I've enjoyed the Element, though I've been underwhelmed by the mpg (if it got better mileage I would keep it for sure). At any rate, I am toying with the idea of replacing the timing belt, starter, water pump, fuel pump and alternator in the hopes of having a vehicle I can reasonably rely on to 200K. I am assuming the transmission will last if I continue to take care of it.

Thought I'd see if anyone here has been up in the 200K range and/or if anyone could tell me how many years/miles before they lost a starter, water pump, fuel pump, alternator, transmission and/or other significant part. Running to failure was fine when I was younger, but I don't want to take that approach now that I'm a little older.

FWIW. Always change oil every 5K. Air/cabin filter as needed. Rear axle fluid replacement and AT fluid replacement at 85K. Brakes replaced at 65K (about due again). Battery replaced. On my 3 set of tires. Never driven off road or any severe duty.

We have a timing chain, not a belt. I would not replace any of the other items until you start to have problems, except maybe the water pump. I haven't heard of a starter yet that just worked fine then stopped. It starts to act up before it goes. The alternator is pretty expensive to replace preemptively. I don't recall hearing about any dead fuel pumps yet. Your oil change schedule is good. I would start doing your rear differential every 30k. I do my transmission every 30k, but that's me. I can feel a difference at almost exactly 30k in the transmission. Do you valves, or have them done. Change your power steering and coolant and you should be all set.

My exoerience with my 5 Honda vehicles is they do not typically have a failure without warning. THat is except the battery but even then sutle cues come through.

With water pump on past Accords, I had plenty of building squeal on the bearings before they began leaking coolant. Alternator, again on an Accord, only went after high revving showed some charging issues (idiot light would try to come on briefly when voltage out of range with dying diodes), etc. With moderate driving style and maintenance well kept, I would think you are good to avoid most situations that would leave you dead. The only thing changing that would be a system stress like say you overheated on day, etc.

Sounds to me like you have things well in hand but understand the thoughts. BUt what I loved on my Honda's was the lack of leaving me stranded.

I'm at 150,000 miles and the only item on your list I've needed to change is the starter. A little insight is needed here though. I'm an outside salesman and use my E to make my sales calls and drive my routes. While the typical driver might start their car 6 or 8 times a day I probably start my car 20-30 times a day. Just saying.

Have savings!

Bought my 2005 EX at 92k. Have replaced the AC compressor, power steering pump, alternator, both front bushings and strut mounts, new plugs, brake pads, serpentine belt, battery... am saving now for new struts and rotors, it's necessary!
The engine is nosier than when at 92k. Am at 114k and as much as I love my E. I am disappointed. I was told by everyone that Honda's are in their own league and last forever. If I had known all the required maintenance and the poor gas mileage (16mpg), I might have gotten something else. I paid a lot for my E at 92k, it was a big investment, and the repairs keep coming. There is also poor insulation in the E.
BTW, I had the previous maintenance records from the owner, he changed the oil religiously and since then I have followed the owner's manual as suggested.
