My Honda locking gas cap tether mod.

Hey guys, I thought I'd share a simple mod I did a little while back. While re keying the factory gas cap to my ignition key, I decided that I wanted to make my own gas cap tether. I used most of the parts from a gas cap tether kit I had bought from an Ebay seller.

I actually got the idea for this mod, by looking at the pictures from this thread.

^^Thanks for posting that karabass.

^^Here's the kit I used.

^^From that kit, here's what I ended up using. The plastic zip tie included with the kit wouldn't work in the location I needed to place it, so I chose to use a piece of 550 para cord, which I removed the inner core from.

^^I cut down the threads on the stainless screw and used a speed nut.

^^After installing the speed nut and screw, I sealed the backside with hot glue. I did this just to keep moisture from creeping into the cap and to prevent it from backing off the threads.

^^Once I installed the tether, I cut the para cord to length and melted the ends and used a plastic para cord end to finish it off.

^^Here's how it looks before shutting the door, I just drape it over the cap.

Thanks for looking.:)

^^Why thank you, I always appreciate your comments. :)

Para cord is very durable, so I don't think that would really be much of an issue. I've fueled up with the tether in place a few times and have yet to get any fuel on the para cord. Just be mindful of what you're doing and it shouldn't be a problem.:)

One thing to watch - the adhesive of the double faced tape provided with most cable tie anchors isn't rated for exposure to humidity, temperature extremes, and gasoline fumes. You might want to consider drilling a hole through the "cup" on the door, and using a screw and eyelet to retain the tether.

However, as slimmerdogs pointed out in his solution to the problem of getting an un-rekeyed cap off when you lose the key, ( http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?p=935808#post935808 ) the added security of the lock is illusory.

The installation of the tether (rjedro /feebay ~$7.50) works just as well with OEM gas caps, is a lot simpler, and solves the problem of having to crawl under the vehicle if the cap escapes your grasp. ;-)

Thanks for the heads up, but within the six months it's been in place it has easily withstood various extremes in temperature/humidity and the adhesive has shown no signs of loosening.

As for using a screw/eyelet combo to hold the tether in place, I had thought of that while planning this mod, but I chose not to go that route, as I wanted the option to quickly/easily remove the cap with it's tether in place. This would be done by simply opening the para cord end and sliding the para cord out of the holder. I wanted that option for those times my vehicle has to be emission tested and the gas cap would need to be removed for them to check it's seal.

Certainly interesting, but this mod would be for someone who already owns a locking gas cap and would wish to add a tether to it.

Well of course it would be simpler, as it wouldn't require dissembling the cap and everything else I've described. :) Like I said this mod was for those with a locking gas cap who may want to add a tether. If someone wanted a tether for their factory non locking cap sure they could just purchase the same kit I used/modified for their factory cap, or they could purchase the factory cap/tether that comes on newer model Elements.;-)
Since originally doing this mod I've made a few minor changes, so as soon as I get a chance to take some pics I'll post them in here and explain those differences.

Thanks

Here are those updated pics I said awhile back that I would post. I guess better late than never. :)

The minor changes were repositioning the gutted 550 para cord through the zip tie mount and attaching a Sampo brand swivel to the end. I also covered the metal squeeze clip with a small piece of heat shrink. I think it works and looks much better than my first version.

The swivel at the end is a nice touch- it's all in the details ! Plus everything is nice and clean
