Hello, new to EOC and Elements.
I'm curious about the 6spd wap - however don't fully understand the reverse lock-out. Someone previously posted about a solenoid. Is it possible to have a reverse lock-out from OEM/available parts? Does something need to be fabricated?
Going from 70mph to reverse doesn't sound fun...
Thanks
Welcome to EOC.

Take a look at this thread and the reverse lockout explanation and discussion My Element now is a 6-speed MT.

My experience so far is that it's not easy to mistakenly shift into the reverse slot while driving. The reverse position is further to the right of the new 6th gear (right below 5th) and the gap is slightly wider than the gaps between 1/2-3/4-5/6. However, I am careful and deliberate when shifting into 6th and do not rush it I sometimes even start the motion and feel for the synchro to engage before fully shifting....maybe it's just in my head that I can feel it;). Finally, when I have someone else drive, I ask them NOT to use 6th gear....just to be safe.

I don't know if you could find a solution....obviously the TSX 6M has a reverse lockout so perhaps it's not that hard. I just haven't researched it and do not plan to pull my tranny anytime soon. Would love to hear from you if you do figure it out.

I would agree and vouch with vtech92's feedback.

Regarding installing a reverse lock out after doing the 6th gear conversion - from what I understand, it's actually an electronic solenoid that would have to be sourced from other K-series 6 speed transmissions, that installs around the shift linkage (outside and on top the transmission). The solenoid engages based on a signal from the ECU once you hit a certain speed.

While the peace of mind would be really nice, I too have not found accidently shifting into reverse while going from 5th to 6th a major risk. The driver would really have to go out of their way to do so as vtech92 said, it's really far right compared to the other gears when going into 6th is straight down from 5th on the H - pattern. Then again, like him, I too am very deliberate and careful when going into 6th not to do something I'd really regret.

On a side note - oh man, I'm I so glad I finally have that extra gear! I won't lie - it was a big PITA doing the work (at least for me as I was doing everything off the ground). Well worth it though looking back.

Right on! Thank you both for the input. I can live without a lock-out, but will still ask around anyways.
Going to make a list and price out parts. Will look back through the threads, however if anyone wants to chime in feel welcome - I'm sure prices have gone up or "supply chain" whatnot.
Got quoted higher than I thought for the labor ($850) not including the install. If I can keep the project under $2k I'm down. Thats a lot but with stupid high prices...
Can post what I find too if useful.

Forgot to mention, the only time shifting to 6th gets a little sketchy is when shifting from 4th to 6th. The motion is not straight down from 5th so that's when I have to take care to find the right increment.

Hmm ok. Tekniq above describes a straight down pull from 5-6. Don't often skip gears though.
What years of the TSX have the 6th that is compatible?

Here is an all K-series transmission table. Note the TSX has a higher ratio for gears 1 & 2. Rest are same + 6th.

Does anyone know a shop in San Diego that would be willing to do this conversion? My transmission needs a rebuild and if I'm going to do it, I want to do it with the Acura parts for the 6-speed upgrade. I just can't find a shop that feels comfortable doing it.

Do you need them to remove and reinstall the transmission when completed? If not, DM me if you can't find a shop.

Another option is this from TN:

They have an option for 6th gear install you'll need to inquire about.

Either way, good luck! You'll be super happy with the final product.

The shop already has it out. I'm in a holding pattern until I can find someone who can do it. I'll DM.

Honda Element 6 speed Manual Transmission Conversion

Part numbers supplied are from a 2006 Acura TSX 6MT
The identical parts could be obtained from a 2006 Civic Si 6MT, but the part numbers will be slightly different.

I recommend both of these manuals:
Helms Honda Element Manual
Helms Acura TSX Manual

- Shifter mechanism parts -
Reverse shift piece 24240-PNS-000
Shift arm interlock 24430-PNS-000 (or modify the old one)

5-6 gearshift fork 24201-RAS-000 NOTE: In at least one CRV and possibly in some later model Elements the Reverse shift piece may be welded to the Element's 5-Reverse shift fork, instead of being attached by a pin. In this case see step 3 below.

These parts are optional. The function of these parts hasn't been determined; however the transmission functions well without them. They may be necessary for reverse safety interlock.
  • MBS arm 24412-PNS-000
  • MBS arm spring 24413-PNS-000

* - added by MikeQBF. }

- Main shaft parts -
Mainshaft 6th gear 23590-RAS-A00
Needle Bearing (35 x 41 x 24) 91103-RAS-003
Collar (28 x 35 x 24) 23916-PNS-000
5-6 Synchronizer Sleeve Set 23626-PNS-315

- Countershaft parts -
Special bolt 90011-PPP-000
Countershaft 6th gear 23491-RAS-000
In case anyone is interested, there is a kit available for this that saves saves you $300-500 on parts.

It's almost like somone used this exact post to create it. Same order and parts.

I found a tuner shop in San Diego that wanted to do the job. My transmission needed a rebuild anyways (ring gear & counter shaft f*d). They are also installing a Phantom Grip LSD. I figured I may as well if it's going to be on the bench.

I know I'm driving this car till the wheels fall off, and even when they do, I'll just find another Element and swap out transmissions. :)

I'll let you know how it goes.

Would be interested to know what the budget $ vs actual $ turns out to be if you could please share that info. I am very much thinking this would be great on my 2004 120k miles 5sp. I have a shop that can do the work.

@garagerockr - were you happy with the work that the shop in San Diego that added the 6th speed? I'm looking to have the work done but would prefer to use someone who has done it before. I've got a 2006 EX.
So far so good! I'm happy with the experience, and the transmission feels good. I'll let you drive it if you want.

The shop is CarTune in the Kearny Mesa area, and the desk manager's name is David. Message me if you want an idea of what they charged for labor (specific to AWD). They can probably get the parts, but they also allow you to source them yourself if you want - of course, the warranty is not the same if you do that.

I needed to rebuild anyways, so I figured I would just do it right and upgrade. They also found a few other little things that needed to get done that were easier to accomplish with the transmission out. The LSD makes everything more responsive

The guys at the shop are really nice and professional. They know what they were talking about based on what I have learned on this thread. They are also Honda "fans," and have done the swap on other 2.4L cars other than my 2007 AWD.

Let me know.

Yeah, I'd like to try it out if you are up for it. I can't seem to DM you directly, so maybe you can DM me to get the ball rolling.

I want to see how different mine drives. My 1st and 2nd gear seatings are a bit too rough for me, so I wanted to have that taken care of when they do the conversion. I'm down in North Park but can meet you anywhere.

DM Sent. My first and second were pretty rough, too. It might just be an Element thing. It has always been hard to get a nice smooth takeoff in first, no matter the finesse of the footwork. Seems better now, but still not perfect. Reverse has never been perfect, either.

Obviously, you would have the clutch replaced at the same time as the rebuild.
