This unit has received the "BigAl approval" as well, with him helping iron any kinks out while the units were being made, and made better as well as revisions to the instruction to make it more installer friendly.

Well, testing is done and this mod is BigAl approved. :D

I've been in contact with Zack and we've been ironing out a few wrinkles to make this as DIY-friendly as possible. The installation instructions that he provides are clear and simple. I must warn, however, that if you're not mechanically inclined, this mod is NOT for you. It requires removal of a few panels, recognition and tapping of wires, and the normal bending and contorting that is normally involved with working under the dash. While everything is easy to understand, just getting to some of the harnesses is the biggest challenge.

Once installed, the system is simple to use. First of all, it replaces the factory remote by locking and unlocking all of the doors with a single click.

To start the engine, you press the * button for one second, the lights flash, then the engine cranks. It has a couple of security features...you can start it with the doors locked, then unlock as you approach, and also the brake pedal cuts the remote start circuit. If someone hops in to try to take the car, as soon as they press on the brake to take it out of park, the engine dies. In order to drive off, you have to put the key in the ignition and turn it to "on" (NOT start) before pressing the brake pedal. Once started, the marker lights flash to give a visual reminder that the engine is running. The remote ignition automatically times out after 12 minutes.

Right now, it has a range of 30 to 40 feet, but I need to play around with the antenna placement. I will post my findings when I get a chance to mess with it.

Stay tuned for more details...;-)
Please PM me with any questions you may have before ordering. This unit can be installed with basic hand tools and includes all connectors that are needed to install the unit. You should have a basic understanding of electrical circuits and know how to make connections in the vehicle correctly before atempting this DIY mod. It is NOT FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSION ELEMENTS. That having been said, it's ready for those who are ready for it. ;-)

Is it hackable to MT?

#4 ·
not this unit. there are some that are remote start and alarm all in one unit as it has to monitor door triggers and other entry points plus follow a shut down procedure everytime your exit to ensure "safe starting" but i personally wont even install one of those on a car. plus they are considerably more expensive and more involved to install.

#5 ·
I was afraid you were gonna say that. *sigh* The price you pay for control...

#6 ·
Is there any way you could post the instructions on this page? I'm a bit nervous about wiring work and would like to see what I'd be getting myself into before I ordered.

Twi, apparently thats the price for control... but not REMOTE control:lol:

i hope to have the instruction postable soon, but all the pictures have to be watermarked before i put the instruction PDF up. right now it is just in printed form.

#8 ·
Hell I can do that in 5 seconds at the sink, send 'em on over!

#11 ·
its gonna start getting cold soon folks, and you wont want to be trying to put this in with gloves on because you waited too long. :) the instructions are now up on the order page for those who want to see exactly what is involved.

#13 ·
I dont know that Al has had a chance to mess with his but mine works from over 100 feet away. i dont know what kind of range you need with it, but you shouldnt be starting it if you cant see it from where you are anyway.

now i cannot gaurantee that this will make anyone as cool as big al, but it will make your e super cool in the summer, and hot in the winter. ;-) winter time is comming people, you wont want to be fumbling around when it is too cold to install it.

#18 ·
For all you fellow cold weather people, you won't be sorry getting one of these. Actually you'll wonder how you ever did without one. And this is a really good price.

I'm about to cough up $400 to have one installed on my E. Main issue is that it's a manual transmission.

Anyway, take my word for it. I've done 7 nasty winters up here in North Dakota so far. Being able to fire up the car 10 minutes before going outside and not having to scrape windows, have a cold butt and steering wheels, and not feeling like you're driving a freezer box is great.

#19 ·
thanks for the bump. it is very nice to have. i have had it on almost every car i have owned in the past 10 years (except my s2k since it was manual) and i couldnt do without it now.

I'm pretty much sold on this. A little hesitant as I've never messed with vehicle wiring aside from car stereos and the potential for the vehicle not starting when I'm done seems quite prevalent :). I imagine it's similar to a car stereo install as far as connecting wires though I've always used the posi-twist wire nuts. I don't know a lot about remote start honestly. Couple questions:

A ball park install time on this from start to finish using the t-taps?

Is there a pic of the actual remote somewhere? I didn't see one.

How do you activate the timer mode and what settings does that entail?

Couple questions:

A ball park install time on this from start to finish using the t-taps? I am not sure of your capabilities so it is difficult to say but I can put it in in about 20 minutes, though i have been doing this for a living for over a decade. so i would say that you would maybe want to allow a few hours to be safe. maybe al can chime in here too since he put one in according to the instructions provided

Is there a pic of the actual remote somewhere? I didn't see one. the remote is ziptied to the bottom left corner of the brain in the picture.
How do you activate the timer mode and what settings does that entail?i dont use timer mode myself but i can see why you would up there. there are no settings per say just a procedure with the remote to activate it that is detailed in the actual product manual that is included with each unit sent along with other capabilities. the element specific manual posted on the page is just for getting the unit installed, the user should read the entire owners manual to become familiar with its functions.
hope that helps

It took me a couple of hours. The actual installation is not difficult due to the detailed instuctions. The hardest part is just the bending and twisting involved with working under the dash, but it's no biggie. Just read the instructions from front to back before you begin. This will get you familiar with where everything goes.

#26 ·
Come on people, spoil yourselves.:D This is an awesome deal. Since I've already personally installed a remote starter/security system on my E,I don't have need for one of these units, but good luck with your sale Yoda E SC I hope you sell alot of these.

#30 ·
Did I read that link correctly? You loose one programed key with this instal? And only one remote, bummer.

it is a DEI product, i am not a big fan of compustar myself. you shouldnt EVER start your vehicle if you cant see it anyway. it is a safety issue. 100+ feet that i have gotten (probably more as i havent used a tape measure to actually see) is more than enough for most as they dont live on 1000 acre pieces of land, park at one end and have a house on the other. ;-)

I do have one question about this product. These cars have chips in the key to prevent theft. If we leave a key in the car to allow for remote start, it also means that the car can be driven off if someone tries to steal it right? On a previous car with remote start the alarm took over to shut it down and not let it drive away. I would not like to get my car stolen and find out from insurance that "I left a key in the car" which makes it my fault. All anti-theft features will be nullified right? If so, I may have to get a remote start alarm combo.

the factory key is made to not start the car before installation is finalized as mentioned in the instructions that you can view on the store page. it is only used to trick the car into thinking that there is a key in the cylinder and it only does it during remote start activation. the factory immobilizer system remains intact and if someone found the key they couldnt start it if the instructions were followed. please let me know about any other questions or concerns. thanks.

#37 ·
there are other immobilizer interface modules that dont require losing a key but....

A: they are considerably more expensive then the one that uses a factory key in an antenna and

B: they are NOT DIY friendly as they require cutting into and interfacing with the factory immobilizer wires comming from the key cylinder.

i am used to dealing with both these situations myself and so are most well trained capable installers, but cutting into immobilizer wires by someone that is not familiar with a product's installation can result in the car not starting with the key and/or the ECU/immobilizer system not working or being damaged. this is why the DIY provides the keybox type solution. they key is ground down once the installation is complete so that if a theif finds it they cant use it to steal the car.

#38 ·
I'm not even referring to using the exact key. Since the immobilizer is in the car, they could just jam the ignition and start it right? The immobilizer doesn't need to be in the actual ignition, just near by from what I understand. The point of an immobilizer is to keep someone from hot wiring a car or just jamming something in the ignition. So with this system, and someone tries to jam the ignition or hot wire it, it will or won't drive under those circumstances? I am ignorant about this that is why I ask. I had a kill start on my previous Viper alarm with remote start, it didn't rely on the cars key programming to keep someone from driving away. I assumed that was because the one and only stock theft prevention tool was basically disabled by placing a key inside.

In theory, couldn't a key without any programming work in the ignition if a remote start is installed and the immobilizer is in the area?
