I fixed the issue today with a piece of foam inserted between windshlied and the dash board.

I though that the A-Pillar trim was in case, but after I removed the trim and continue to drive ( I tilted  ), the rattle was still there. I pushed the dash with thumb, near the windshield, and the rattle was gone. I released the pressure, the rattle came back.

I put a few folded sheets of paper in the gap, no rattle! So, 3 pieces of black foam later and voilĂ ! No more annoying rattle :)

My 07 EX just started w/dash rattling

Just this past week my EX w/about 8,000 miles developed a plastic like clicking noise(s) that sound like its coming from behind the dash just to the right of the steering column and also from behind the gauges. Pressing and pushing on the dash really doesnt stop them and after the interior has sat in the sun and heated up alot of it goes away. Any ideas?? Also am I wasting my time by telling the dealer and are they just prone to making it worse by ripping apart the dash?? Also, like most other E owners Im on my second windshield but it was installed by the dealer. It seemed like a nice clean tight job. No loose trim that I can see.

Dash Rattle?

We took the E to Florida for its first road trip. I drove down alone, husband joined me later and drove most of the way back. Got great MPG 23-26 overall for the trip (26 highway my first fill-up and it only had like 500 miles on it when I left). comfortable, no complaints about visibility, etc.

But on the way home, the dash on the left side started some weird creaking noise. Rich said it seemed like it was the wipers. I read the threads from the dash creaks -- but seems like nobody's experiencing this since like '05? Am I the only person with a newer model who's heard it? Was on the interstate, speed of about 75, you could see the wipers moving in the wind somewhat. He was just going to get new blades and see if it fixed it, but wondering if a trip to the dealer is in order first.

Fog lights and body molding arrive tomorrow. Still trying to find a better overall price on my nav system but need to get it ordered. Thinking the brush guards will be going on too. A baby "rhino pack" is probably totally a chick thing, but I think it will be cute. :)

Rattle behind passenger side dashboard ...

Hello all , I hope someone can PLEASE help me .....I have had this "rattle" in the passenger side dash for 6 months or so ... It comes and goes .. Sounds like it is coming from right behind the main piece .. I have taken apart the dash on that side as far as I could and can't seem to run down where it is coming from ...

And to make it worse.. The "Rattle " comes and goes ..Now to help a little maybe the sound of it is like something is come loose; It will "Roll" one way when you turn... Then when you turn again it "rolls" the other way ??? It sorta seems like it's steel a ball or a rod ?? and rolling on plastic

OK I know this is too long as usual .. And I did try the Search Part of this web site with no good results ... So Please ? Please .. can someone try to help me ?? Thank You so much for everything , Don J. 2003 EX

I had a rattle that seemed like it was in the dash... I didn't find it until a friend was with me..they heard it in the overhead compartment... a pen and tire pressure gauge would roll around... only sometimes. hope you find your rattle :)

Arrrrg ... ?

No one has had this problem ?? It sounds like a big marble is in the A/C ductwork on the passenger side on the top of the dash ?? Makes me crazy I had the dash apart and then the noise stopped and it still comes and goes ..

Please ... Please , Any Help Here ?? Thanks ,Don J.

Rattles are a tough thing to chase down, and are usually different in every car unless there's a design issue. I've found that foam insulation tape (sticky on one side, foam on the other) works great for killing rattles & rubbing noises between trim pieces. But a rolling sound...until you find whatever it is that's rolling around in there and remove it, there's not much that can be done except turn up the stereo.

And fishlee brings up a good point...the source of the sound may be something unexpected. I thought I had a rattle in my passenger side door...turned out to be my tire gauge rattling in the glovebox. At one point I thought I had a loose marble in the dash...turned out the tiny tubular case for my headphone cord was rolling around in the dash cubby.

I also have a rattle on the passenger A pillar or behind the dash as well, but can't seem to isolate it. I'm planning on putting raamat everywhere and hopefully I can fix the rattle then.

My passenger A pillar is making some noise right now as well. When the stereo shop put in new tweeters, they didn't have the correct single-use Honda clips (needed because of the airbag in there), so they put in some clips that they had on hand. They ordered the correct clips and offered to install them for me, but I'll be pulling one of my A pillars next weekend (hopefully) to run the wiring for my autodim/compass/temp mirror, and will just install the correct clips then. I've almost got the mount done for the mirror...should have the time to finish the mirror mount and do the install (along with installing fog lights) over Veteran's Day weekend.

Oh Well , Thanks anyhow .. I guess this is not a common problem ... I have thought of the glove box thing and emptied it which of course didn't help .. But that is just what it sounds like ...
I think I posted before that I also took the dash apart as far as I could on that side ... I needed to sit over there and have someone else drive while I tried to find it ... but before i got a chance to do that it stopped rattling ... i left the dash apart for a long time ...2 months?? and it never came back ... But it has come and gone a few times scince then ....
Guess I will have to get serious with it ... take the dash apart again and have someone else drive while I listen and try to find it ...
I was an auto mechanic in a few dealerships a long time ago and that was one of the worst jobs ... They would only pay you for fixing whatever it was making the noise not for all yhe time you spent looking for it ... Ugh!!! ... Well --- Really , Thanks for looking at my post here anyhow .. When I find it I will post what it was ... Maybe it will help someone else ... Don J.

I would say to check the windshield trim as they come loose a lot and rattle and it sounds like it is coming from the dash. You can go and wiggle the plastic pieces on the side of the windshield and see if its loose and if it is stuff a piece of paper towel under it and take it for a drive and see if the noise changes or goes away. as for the rolling sound maby something fell down one of the top vents and is rolling around the heater box. try pulling the cabin filters and see if you can look in the box and see if anything it in there. If it is in there a bendable wire with something sticky on the tip should retrieve it.

Dash rattle/creaking

I've read alot of posts from owners of older e's but none from an 08. When it's cold out, my dash creaks when I hit a bump. Sometimes on the right side, sometimes on the left. I've tried putting pressure on different panels while driving but cant seem to fine it. Any ideas besides quitting my job and moving where its always warm? :D

i have had my E for 2 winter so far and the dash creeking and rattling just started a month ago,,, just another anoying thing to deal with along with the rear popping when going over bumps and such,,, just waiting for november 2008!!!! I hope you find out whats causing yours,, dave

Im glad someone finally brought this up. I was considering a similar new topic myself...

My 07 EX is freaking horrible especially when its cold. It actually started at around 8,000 miles but it wasnt quite cold and I dont know why it started either. I really cant decide if I want to tell the dealer and have them rummage around. I still think that they will make it worse or set off a whole new batch of problems.

I did have to have the windshield replaced in June but all the external trim pieces are tight and secure. The dealer did the windshield repair so I dont think they screwed anything up. In fact I thought they did an excellent job. Also the plasticky, rattley, squeaky sounds started around August. When the interior warms up, it goes away almost completely.

I also can not tell what is doing it. Its definitely on the drivers side. Sometimes it sounds like its behind the gauges; sometimes near the passenger airbag light and the upper vents...other times it could be nearer the steering column or just to the right of the steering column. Pushing and pressing doesnt do any good. Nothing is noticibly loose. Its not the A pillars...

Anyone else have any thoughts??

It started completely on its own.

I have had it since new on an 03. It is worse now and add the noise from the rear seats when they are up and the E is a rattletrap. The dealer claims that they never get this complaint and for an hourly charge they would tear it apart and look. I just live with it until one day when I will sell it and get an X3 BMW.

same here . . .

just drove to disneyland for the thanksgiving weekend on the way home, during the early cold morning my dash was creaking also. i have only had my Element for about 2 weeks. :-? hopefully it will settle w/ time:?

I had the rear popping noise a few months after i drove it home. Long story short, after trying the dealer first, with no success, I found an OLD thread here about the pins holding the upper door being too tight. Sprayed some white lithium grease as suggested and the problem went away. It has been 5 months and all is good - no popping over bumps.
