We just got our third Newf last night
damn... maybe just open a door and use the leaf blower....

just sayin'

My hat's off to you... three of them. wow.

I'm interested in hearing what people say about the dyson, I've pondered that one too.

This months Consumer Reports deals with Vacuum Cleaners and covers how well they do with pet hair.
Based on LAST YEARS edition, we ended up with the Top Rated Sears Kenmore, it did better and was substantially cheaper than the Dyson

Good luck with your 3rd!

We have the Yellow one. I don't know the model name, but it works well. Our house is 3 floors so we moved the sears up stairs. It's lighter, and also works well. The only issue with it is the bags. I like the Dyson do to the fact that they are not needed. Other than that, Not a hell of a lot of difference in the cleaning power.

I have the dyson animal I love it. Yes you do have to cut the fur off the beater brush. I havn't met a vacuume yet that you didn't. I don't use the small brush on furniture easier to just wipe the down.
Have you been over on Newf.net? lots of info on vac. flooring type and anything Newfy. Generaly a good group of people.

We have the Dyson Animal and while it's a GREAT vacuum and one of the best I've used, save your money and get the yellow one instead. The only difference with the "Animal" model is that it comes with the air-powered mini turbo head for cleaning your fur-niture. Doesn't work too great on our couches, although I admit I haven't sat down and experimented with it yet.

Other than that, it's a fabulous vacuum. Great suction, pretty damn good at rugs, handles pet hair like a champ. We have so much pet hair (and I don't vacuum every day... :rolleyes ) that I have to dump the canister twice before I'm done, but that's a minor nit in my opinion. It still cleans a damn site better and easier than 99% of the vacuums out there. And yes, the whole "doesn't lose suction" is pretty important when cleaning pounds of pet hair out of the carpets. Just keep half an eye on the hair level in the canister. When it's time to empty, I just hold it over our large trash bin outside, open, and whack it on the inside of the bin. Everything just falls out and everyone's happy :D

Honestly I don't know if I could go back to bag vacuums now. I grew up with a Kirby and had one myself for a number of years - GREAT vacuums, incredibly well built, but heavy as lead and changing bags just sucks. Canisters are the way to go, especially one that works this well! Just do have a place you can empty the canister outside, as emptying it inside will have the same effect as throwing a vacuum bag in the garbage then stomping on it

We considered the dyson when we needed a new vac last fall. Wound up with a riccar instead. The main flaw for me was that the collection chamber of the demo (3 mos old) stunk to high heaven and blew that nasty mouldy vaccum cleaner smell all over. Yeah bags are old school but the nasty goes with them and as long as you change them frequently don't diminish air flow much. The attachments that came with it are simple and effective.

I used to sell rainbows in my earlier years. Best vac around. Too bad rainbow knows that $$$$.

Just get a bunch of element flooring and rip out your carpet and recover your couch with it too, then you could just "hose it out".

Bypass the Dyson and get a vacuum that you will have for the next 15 years.

Riccar at www.riccar.com

If you are looking for the utlimate vacuuum look at the Radiance. The Brilliance is also an excellent vacuum. We have both the Brilliance and the Radiance and they are amazing machines that are built to last with metal brush rolls, metal handles, etc. Riccar machines cost more, but you do get what you pay for. And if you are willing to pay that much for a Dyson, the Riccar is a much better investment. I have seen at least 2 Dysons that came in for repair at our local Riccar dealer and the people opted to trade in the Dyson for the Riccar.
I use our Riccars literally daily, and after 2 years both run like new.

Regarding the foul smell from the bag, I change our bags at least every 2 weeks, and I have never had a problem with bag odor. Also, purchase vacuum scent tabs. They go right in the bag and emit a very fresh smell as you vacuum. People comment how the room smells better after I vacuum.

We have a Dyson canister and it works great. My big problem is allergies. Any other vacuum I've ever owned has thrown me into sneezing fits while I'm vacuuming. So bad that I usually had to head to a different floor of the house while the wife was vacuuming. With the Dyson, I can vacuum the whole house and no sneezies! The suction is good to very good, but the low dust emissions are the selling point for me. That and it looks cool:p

It's not the smell from bag vacuums, it's the fact that changing them is quite dirty (all over me) and I need to change them at LEAST every time I vacuum. Yes, we have that much pet hair and dirt.

I'd love to get a Rainbow water filtration vac, but as Brawsie said they're $$$$$$.

I'll also agree with Rotomoto - the filtration on the Dyson is fantastic for anything short of a water vac!

I have the Dyson Ball DC 15 and love it. I love the way it moves around objects. You must try out the different styles in the store and see what you like but I find it hard to use a regular vacuum anymore. My sister in law has the animal I think it's the DC 13. The wand attachment on hers is very complex and takes some extra time to use. The wand in the Ball is very simple and quick. The Ball does not have the spinning brush attachment like the Animal but I have never found those to be that effective. You would have to check and see if the newer versions of the animal have the updated wand. The canister is easy to dump and about once every 6 months I will open the canister and rinse it out with water to clean out the seperate cyclone chambers.

We used to have a Hoover canister vac and it was worthless!!! I was always having to wash/replace those hepa filters.

dyson

I have the original dyson. I have owned for about 4 years. It works great. I clean out the dust bin frequently and have never had a problem with smell. The bin can be easily cleaned.
I have cats and it works great in picking up animal hair and dirt.

The only thing I don't care for is the reservable wand. The newer models have easier access to the wand, which is the quick draw wand or the telescope reach wand. The Dyson is heavy. Carrying between floors can be a drag.

I have had Kenmore and Panasonic vacuum cleaners in the past. The Dyson seems very durable.

Here is the link to dyson: http://www.dyson.com/homepage.asp

Good luck in your decision.

Got our Dyson DC-14 a few weeks ago from Target on clearance.
The scariest test of all...we used our Hoover vac, then went over the same exact area with the Dyson right after it. The amount of dirt and dog hair (Chow/Shepherd mix) that the Dyson pulled up was disgusting. The thought that we thought we were getting a good cleaning all along...but it's also reassuring that now it's getting EVERYTHING.
Highly recommend.

my pets are in my sig pic. we have a yellow dyson and have had it for almost a year and i love it. our carpet is 6 years old and was matted down. the dyson sucked it up into a standing position as long as we did not walk on it. our last vacuum didnt even come close. and i like that i can break it down and throw it in the dishwasher when it gets a little stinky. i just discovers the reversible handle and i love it. it is not that difficult to handle.

My wife is a vacuholic. She lovingy calls it her giant sucking machine. When the time came for a new one her infomania kicked in and she did extensive research. The outcome was the Kenmore upright with the sensor light. I have to admit it is the uber vacuum of all uber vacuums, hand to god. Pet hairs, hah! I laugh at your pet hairs.
