HVAC bulb replacement on center dash - step by step with images

Well for the past 2 months i have not had a back light on my hvac guage and its a real pain to see it at night. so i ordered some #7219 bulbs on ebay. a 10 pack for $10. Not bad.

So i waited for them to come in the mail. I just did the rear bushings and was feeling handed so I wanted to attempt this. I took the center dashboard out and disconnected both harnesses.

Took the center dash to the work table i set up and looked to see what I was getting into. I watched a youtube video and they made it look simple but anytime i mess with electric i get a little nervous but i said screw it lets go.

I found the bulb i belived to be out so I took a flat head screw driver and turned it a quarter turn to the unlock position and turned the cover over and it popped out. I then needed to unhook the wires on the bottom of the post so the bulb would slide out. I used a screw driver and forced the wire off the post.

I then Slid the bulb out and put the new bulb next to it.

I then noticed the post had 2 holes in the bottom of it to guide the new leads through. That relieved some anxiety of how that would work.

Slide the new bulb in. noticed the leads where not long enough.

Took a second bulb out and cut the leads off it. Used the extra 3/4 of an inch to attach it to the end of the other lead and wrapped it around the post so there would be good contact when i reassembled it.

Put back in the hole and turn to the lock position. make sure all the others are tight.

Put it back in the car connect harnesses and your done. My light worked 100% and it took so little time. Good luck and god bless. I hate when bulbs are out so I am relieved that it was so easy to fix my hvac light on my dashboard.

Read thru the threads related to the HVAC bulbs and decided I wanted a quick and easy fix that was cost-effective...

My quick & dirty (& cheap) solution was to use the Radio Shack bulbs that are a replacement for the button bulbs- 7219 (Radio Shack 272-1092)- for the top dial lights. The leads are plenty long, they're 2 for $2 and best of all they work great!

BA

PS- To give some perspective of the thought process behind my solution I will unashamedly state that I am a former KLR owner. If this means something to you, great. If not, that's ok- you'll run across the 'type' one day!

Backlit Hot/Cold Selector

This morning while driving in the dark, I noticed that my Hot/Cold Selector was not back-lit. Is it usually back-lit - even after having this vehicle for nearly 5 years - I could not remember if it has been back-lit or not. If it is supposed to be back-lit (and I assume it is!) how difficult is it to change the bulb? Thanks!

Hah, i just replaced one light on my controller last week. Now a different one went out. Its very straight forward to do, but I have very big arms and hands so it can take some frustrating maneuvering to get the clips for the electronics out. If only they had some extra slack... I remember alot of cursing and now I have to do it again.

There is even a video on youtube:

The video two posts down refers to a 3mm and a 5mm bulb. Do you happen to know what mm the bulbs are you replaced? I am planning on doing all six while I am doing it.

Our 04 has had the far right bulb out for over a year. Dealer actually did not want to deal with it....

I show 7219 as the lower bulb. You are using a 2174 in the upper? For the upper I currently show 8640. The 2174 is a type T1.75 and rated at 0.48 watts, while 8640 is a T1.25 and 1.12 watts. If you're happy with the 2174's brightness, then that should be the preferred bulb. Honda doesn't specify a wattage for p/n 79629-S3V-A01.

All I knew was 5mm top, 3mm bottom for 12 volts DC, 3 of each. "Wire Leads" I gained from the Web pages.
I haven't gotten an acknowledgement from the Web sites so I won't be surprised if the order disappeared in a cyber black hole?
I'll give it a week and if they're a no-show then I'll use your numbers somewhere else.
Thank you.

Chiming in on this thread since I've been searching around for info on how to fix my dash lights. Regarding the HVAC lights, I was just able to order the 5mm lights from HondaPartsNow.com. They are P/N 79629-SCV-A01 and they are $11.22 each (pricey!). The smaller 3mm bulbs are "discontinued", so the only way to fix these is to wire through a 3mm LED as described by @mr_manny above. I bought some 3mm LEDs off ebay as suggested and I'll try that later. I also had six bulbs in my instrument cluster burned out. I bought them from HondaPartsNow.com and they are a little more reasonable -- 35505-SCV-A01 is the one with 7 bulb locations ($3.02 each) and the 35505-SCV-A11 is the one with the 2 bulb locations (bottom center, $3.02 each).

Ok so I am confused. I have read alot of threads on this subject. Some say the 7219 is too short and another says the 8640 is too short And or doesn't fit. Then they talk about 3mm vs 5mm. Look I am not that smart. So if someone could say in plain english which bulbs I can use to replace the HVAC controls upper bulbs (non honda oem) and plainly where you got them it would really hlep me and others I am sure that have gone through the same thing. thanks

Closing the loop on this. Yes the 8640 were long enough and they went in very easy and they work! I replaced all three in HVAC and it lights perfect. I also purchased HELLA 2721TB Bulb 2721 12V 1.2W W2X4.6D T1.5 (2), Multi from amazon (pack of 2 for $5) and it worked perfect in shifter light down next to the hazard switch. Very happy And saved some Money with extra bulbs to spare. I am going to replace two more on my daughters Element which are out. So total cost to replace the three HVAC and the one shifter were $5.50 shipping included with 7 of the 8640 and one of the 2721 bulbs left over. So there you have it, couldn't be clearer!!!

Update: Just replaced the bulb in the hazard light switch with 7219 12V 60ma 0.72W 3mm Bulb Lamp. Works perfect. Pigtails are long so you have to cut them after you wrap them around. Got them off of ebay 10 bulbs for $10.50 shipped. To date replaced all the failing bulbs in hvac, gear selector and hazard light in two element. Total cost about $25 with plenty of spares for the future.
